Fifth grade students at Oakwood Elementary School participated in Graft’s Wooden Spoon restaurant project in February and raised more then $2,200 in profits to benefit Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners food shelf.
This unique business project held in February provides students with an opportunity to learn business strategies from visiting speakers, running a business and experience the actual running and operation of a restaurant. The district’s Culinary Express department worked closely with the students to assist with food ordering and preparation and many parents assisted in the setup, planning, curriculum and operation of Graft’s Wooden Spoon in the Oakwood Gym.
The restaurant was named in memory of a former Oakwood teacher, Suzanne Graft, who would conduct a similar business experience for her fifth grade class each year. Parents, teachers, district personnel, volunteers and many community members contributed to making this event a truly unique and educational experience for the Oakwood fifth grade students.
